RAF (holders) v Pannal Ash
This game, in aid of the Yorkshire CC Red Cross Fund, was played on the Ashville College ground. Each side was at full strength, and a hard fought game was anticipated. There was a goodly number of spectators who witnessed a game full of interest from start to finish. Pannal Ash batted first and the opening bowlers, Glerum and Locke, bowled a perfect length, did not allow the batsmen to take any liberties; in fact, the first fifteen overs produced only 16 runs. Locke, by the way, is a representative of Surrey CC. After this runs came a little faster, and at the end of 30 overs the Pannal Ash players were all out for 82 runs.
The RAF team started disastrously. Hebblethwaite and Foggitt were soon amongst the wickets, and by the end of the seventh over five very good batsmen had returned to the pavilion for a meagre total of 8 runs. The RAF fought doggedly back, but could never make up sufficiently for their early losses, and after 23 overs had been bowled were all out for 60.
Mr G Briden, in asking Mrs W H King (wife of the President of the league) to present the cup, spoke of both Mr and Mrs King's interest in the game. He also mentioned the fact of the game still being played as a means of keeping it alive for the hoped for return of members and a means of recreation for those serving in the forces in the district. He expressed thanks to Lt Griffiths for the excellent arrangements made for the game.
Mrs King, in presenting the cup to Mr W Joy (captain of Pannal Ash) said the game had been well fought out, each side fielding very well, and she was certain the company present must have enjoyed the afternoon's cricket.
Mr Joy briefly responded, and thanked the RAF team for the excellent game given.
The outcome of the competition is that over £20 will be added to the Fund.
