Darley v Pannal Ash
Just as cricket teams all around the Nidd finished work to go play cricket, it hammered it down with rain!!!
Expecting the game to be called off, two teams emerged from the high mist of Darley not in much of a cricketing mood. As the two captains went out to inspect the pitch, there was no reason to call it off, so after a rubbish call…(should had said tails 'cos then the toss would have been won!!!) we were put into bat.
After a little persuasion, Rob Clarke (31) was convinced to open the batting with Steve West (27). Some fine stoke play mixed with some powerful hits from both batsmen saw Ash start with a 53 run partnership after just 6 overs, until Rob picked out the wrong fielder (going for another six) and was caught out. In an attempt to keep the run rate up Jo ‘split’ Buckley was sent in to hit some big ones. Trying to hit a big one, Jo got bowled. Hard lines. The bowling of S. Robertson (3-21) proved too accurate for some of our batsmen.
Clive McClelland Jnr went into bat and scored quickly, making 26. But after Steve West was finally caught out after three drops, Ned Promptly ran Mark Taylor out for 2 by simply just running without saying anything… Sorry. A couple of overs later, Ned was bowled by old Harrogate CC team mate, Chris Gill. Ned hit him for six, then opened the face of his bat a couple balls later to place the ball into the gap, but missed and got bowled out instead!
James Thompson(16 no) played some fine shots, ran hard and fast, and kept the run rate up, joining him, Rich Turner and Neil Laurence helped add what proved to be valuable runs.
With the return of Dan Harrington (Ginge) (1-34) he was thrown straight into action opening the bowling with Ned McClelland (Ginge) (0-17). The opening partnership between R. Sands (26) and R. Hainsworth (44) was an impressive stand putting on a 58 partnership in just under 8 overs. However it wasn’t quite up with the run rate. After the dismissal of Hainsworth, getting caught by Rich Turner from the bowling of Mark Taylor (1-45), number three batsmen J. Milne was Bowled out by Jo Buckley (3-22) in the following over.
A short stand of 35 between Chris Gill (17) and R. Sands kept the run rate near that required. Until Jo Buckley on his last over of his straight 4 over spell, got both said batsmen out. First ball was Chris Gill getting caught at deep mid off by Ned as Gill failed to find the boundary line. (Hard to believe.) Then on the fourth ball, Sands snicked a quick bouncy ball and the ball fell straight into the hands of wicket keeper Neil Laurence (square head).
The Following over saw Dan Harrington back on and another caught behind, J Hayton (2) the victim. The last over of the game had Darley requiring 21 runs. Harrington's first ball was sent flying to the boundary for four, followed by a quick 2 and a quick single. 3 balls left, 14 required. Ball four was sent for six, which on our ground would have been caught out as it just got over the boundary wall some 40 yards away. 10 from 2 balls, naturally the penultimate ball was hit for four meaning a boundary was needed to win the game. Fortunately, Harrington had finished loosening up, and bowled a corker of a delivery to ensure victory in a somewhat shaky fashion.
Well played lads, most teams called the matches off, so an extra point over those who cancelled, may prove to be the difference later on in the season.
