Goldsborough B v Pannal Ash
We travelled to Goldsborough for our first game of the evening league season and our first game in Division 5 having gained promotion last year.
For a long time it looked as if we may only be able to field 9 players for this game, but late dashes by Ned McClelland and Joe Buckley, from York and Ripon respectively, ensured we could field a full team. New boys Steve West and Adam Tomlinson both made their debuts for the evening league side.
After winning the toss, Mark Taylor decided to bat first and paired Graham Clark with debutant Steve West to open the batting.
The pair made a steady start with some watchful batting that gave no sign of what was to come.
After playing himself in, Steve started to go after the Goldsborough bowling, hitting a succession of powerful blows, on occasions clearing the boundary ropes by miles!! The Pannal Ash players on the sideline were enjoying Steve’s array of shots, the Goldsborough bowlers weren't! Wherever they bowled it, Steve managed to hit it, invariably for a boundary.
At the other end, Graham Clark was finding it hard to get any strike and when he did he unselfishly looked for singles to allow Steve to continue with his assault on the Goldsborough bowling attack.
An opening stand of 101 was reached before Graham was caught for 16. Rob Clarke came in at number 3 and continued to pinch singles allowing Steve to continue his attack and reach his century inside 13 overs.
The innings finished on 182-1, the best score by a Pannal Ash evening league side for many years. Steve West finished with a magnificent 131 not out, Rob Clarke unbeaten on 14.
In reply the Goldsborough opening pair were always going to require a fast start. They obliged by throwing the bat at most balls and some early boundaries saw them keep up with the required run rate early on.
An early change in the bowling saw Ned McClelland replace Mark Taylor. Ned made the breakthrough in his first over with a little help from Joe Buckley who took a smart catch at fine leg. This wicket slowed the momentum for Goldsborough and despite the best efforts of G Hodgson who top scored with 32, the target appeared beyond the home side.
Dan Harrington was the pick of the Pannal Ash bowlers finishing with 2-25, with Tom Clark and Joe Buckley picking up a wicket apiece.
The Goldsborough innings finished on 143-5 from their 16 overs. A great effort but still some 40 runs short of victory.
So the season got off to a winning start! A memorable innings from Steve West on debut was undoubtedly the highlight. Next week we are at home to Burton Leonard, last year’s Division 6 champions.
