Pannal Ash v Burton Leonard B
The first home game of the evening league season saw Burton Leonard travel to Bluecote Wood. Having beaten us in the last 4 games we played against them, Burton Leonard were becoming somewhat of a bogey team for Pannal Ash. Going into the game, we were missing several players but the team were determined to break the good run of results Burton Leonard had enjoyed over us in recent seasons. Bryan Slack called correctly for the visitors and the opted to bowl first. Steve West and Rob Clarke opening the innings with Steve looking to continue his fine form after last week’s 131 not out. Unfortunately for Steve, he was heading back to the pavilion after the 2nd ball of the game after dragging onto his stumps. Things got worse when Rob Clarke was bowled for a golden duck on the first ball of the second over.
With the score at 0-2, things looked bleak for Pannal Ash. Matt Hanson and Mark Taylor set about rebuilding the innings. Scoring was slow initially but the bowling was tight and the wicket was not the easiest to score runs on. By the time Mark was caught for 24 in the 12th over the score had moved onto 47-3. This allowed Joe Buckley (10) and Adam Tomlinson (11 not out) to come in and hit some vital late runs. Matt Hanson batted very well and ended with 26 not out. After 16 overs, the innings closed on 77-4, a good score after an early setback.
Joe Buckley and Mark Taylor opened the bowling for Pannal Ash and kept things tight early on. Joe grabbed the first Burton Leonard wicket with the last ball of his 2nd over, bowling Leigh Parsons for 10. Matt Hanson was introduced into the attack and grabbed the key wicket of Mike Stansfield, Joe Buckley holding a smart catch in the deep. Spin came into operation at both ends as Chris Horner was brought on to replace Dan Harrington who had bowled well and was unlucky not to have taken a wicket. Slow bowling was well suited to the wicket as Chris (3-13) and Matt (2-13) claimed a further 4 wickets. The highlight of which was a stunning caught and bowled by Chris, who dived full length to his left (yes really!!!) to cling onto a one handed catch. Two run outs, both from the arm of Steve West, meant that Steve finished with more run outs than he did runs!!! But also, left Burton Leonard on the brink of defeat. Mark Taylor returned to claim the last 2 wickets and Burton Leonard were all out for 58.
A hard earned 19 run victory was a good result for Pannal Ash. In the pub after the game, it emerged that this was the first evening league game, in league or cup, that Burton Leonard had lost for 2 years! A credit to them as a team and just emphasised what a good result this was for Pannal Ash. A great team performance sets us up for a trip to Birstwith next week, where runs will definitely be easier to come by than in this game!
