Newby Hall 2nds  v   Pannal Ash

A few traumas at the end of the week as the England - Switzerland football game took away a number of players with excuses for holidays, exams, washing hair etc.

So, a brave 10 man team turned up at Newby Hall, keen to continue the form of last week's win over league leaders Lofthouse.

As usual, a cold wind was blowing across the ground as we batted first;  Ali Bowles (10) first to go, playing all round a straight one and Ned McClelland (4) surprised by some extra bounce before James Thompson (22) and Jim Coldwell (35) set about the task of putting us back on track.

Excellent work from Rob Clarke (36) and Joe Buckley (40) pushed us on further before Mike Merryweather and Alan Pitt saw us through an awkward last couple of overs to secure a valuable batting point, Alan needing some assistance when clean bowled by Bret Sullivan (4 for 28) only for the umpire to have called a back foot no ball.

A top notch tea was enjoyed before we rolled out for the second innings, skipper Rob Clarke keen to emphasise we all needed to work to cover the absence of a fielder.

An excellent first over from Ned McClelland (2 for 23) saw Hall skipper Mike Shire (0) back in the sheds, great work at the other end from Joe Buckley (1 for 14) whose 8 overs included 4 maidens.

The fielding was sharp and keen and the wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as change bowlers Mark Taylor (3 for 17) and Ali Bowles (3 for 27) also did well.

A great stop and pick up at square leg by Mike Merryweather and throw to the 'keeper saw a run out and celebrations including a big hug between them............

We enjoyed some good banter as we worked to cover the missing man, the call from the slips, as Mark dived and completely missed a caught and bowled chance, of "too fat, too old, no chance" was a highlight ................ coming from the athlete that is Rob Clarke!

Only A Allen (21) and T Sidwell (21) made double figures as the innings closed at 88 for a 95 run victory and a 6 point haul to put us in good heart for next week's game with Burton Leonard 2nds.

Oh, and those watching the England footballers ............ disappointment again as the over-ego ed, over-paid, prima donnas failed miserably to pass to each other, and sneaked a draw with the might of Switzerland and then complained of being tired!   aaaahhhhhh, diddums.
