The Ash team for this week was missing Ali Bowles (working) and Joe Buckley (golf), so Neil Laurence returned behind the stumps and Dan Harrington for his second debut after his return from aBerdeen Uni, - perhaps it should be McHarrington .........
This is a new ground for us, the village is up near Thirsk and Northallerton and it takes nearly an hour to get there, so we met at the Claro Beagle and set off at 12.30 in a fleet of cars.
The ground took some finding, not sure how we're expected to know it's up a track without a sign!!
The track was soft and there were dark clouds all round, as skipper Clarke lost the toss and the home team decided to bat first.
Thornton had stuffed Ripon last week, so the batsmen were full of confidence, but Mark Taylor grabbed a couple of early wickets to have the home team at 23 for 2.
Both wickets came from catches to Rob Clarke and 'keeper Neil Laurence and there was the key to success as there followed SEVEN (yes, SEVEN!!!!) dropped catches as Thornton batters M Butlers (71), P Pinkney (44), S Pinkney (58 not out) and R Hammerton (34 not out) all took advantage of their good fortune to reach a formidable 228 for 5.
Some concern was expressed by the team about team members Dan Harrington and Ned McClelland both sporting ginger beards, which must surely be in breach of a club rule and if not, it should be!
After a pretty poor tea, Ash openers James Thompson (17) and Chris Horner (17) followed by Jim Coldwell (19) and in particular Ned McClelland (59) had us at 118 for 2 and in a decent position for a push at victory.
Unfortunately, Ned managed to run out Mark Taylor for the second time in a four days, which began a fall of 4 wickets which put us out of contention of victory, but 'Reg' Turner and Neil Laurence ensured we managed the batting point.
This was definitely a bad day at the office!
