Junior Evening League

The U-17 team played for the Arthur Barrett Cup, which we won for the one and only time in 1954, beating Bilton juniors.

We reached the final in 1965, again against Bilton juniors, which drew to a 'thrilling finish'.

The match report shows:

'In the Pannal Ash innings only two batsmen (Peter Bielby and David Oddy) managed to reach double figures and offer any resistance to the accurate bowling of Malcolm Tiffany and Barry Whiteley.   These two bowled unchanged throughout and claimed five wickets each, the former conceding 36 runs and the latter 33.

Opener Bielby hit 17 before he was trapped leg before by Whiteley. No 6 batsman Oddy, who always seems to be successful against Bilton, was not as dangerous on Thursday with his big hitting because the grass was long and wet in the outfield.

The last five wickets fell for the addition of only six runs, three to Whiteley and two to Tiffany.

Tiffany then took over with the bat hitting 27 and putting on 22 with tony Vincent for the first wicket after Chris Murdoch had hit 11 - again only two batsmen reached double figures.

With the score at 68 for 6, Ian Chadwick was caught and bowled by off-break bowler Peter Gould, who claimed 3 for 16 in seven overs.

One run later Tiffany was clean bowled by David Haley with the first ball of the last over of the match.   Two runs were still needed for victory and Haley had Barry Whiteley caught first ball.

Gordon Skinner went in and hit a single. There was an overthrow for which they ran but Colin Healey was run out at the bowler's end.

On the last ball, Bilton still needed one run to win and it went for a bye.'

The cup was presented by Mr Arthur Barrett in place of Billy Sutcliffe, who failed to put in his expected appearance.

The averages are notable in that many of the players played first team cricket for the Ash, but then several had success elsewhere   -   Stewart Cartledge (with brother Phil) at Pannal CC and Geoff Greensword (with brother Eddie) at Harrogate Amateurs.

Our final season in the junior league was 1976, the final table showed a successful season as follows:

At the end of this season we suffered the trauma of the burning down of the pavilion and trying to raise funds to replace that.   Many of the players in this successful season were too old for the following season and, despite a pre-season call for recruits, this was the final record of an Ash side in the league.
