Match  Report

Pannal Ash    v   Pannal A

This game,  played at Bluecote Wood,  was a game that benefited from the attentions of the grounds man's work of Joe Buckley,  who spent most of the afternoon up at the ground cutting and rolling the square as well as cutting the outfield,  everyone at the game commented on how great the ground looked - great work Joe!!

This was Pannal's team with their more accomplished players, so they were likely to be one of our strongest opponents this year.   The Ash team was also amongst one of the strongest we had chosen this year although Lauren Thompson wa a late withdrawal due to a nasty finger injury from school, with Ashley Collett standing in at the last minute - thanks Ashley!

Captain Greg Harrison lost the toss and Pannal decided to bat first.   Our opening bowler partnership of Greg Harrison (2 for 9) and Ollie Bowes (1 for 17) made life difficult for the Pannal opening partnership before Bowes bowled O King (9) and the other opener R Jenkins (1) fell at the same score, the Ash fielding was lively and enthusiastic with plenty of encouragement.   All the bowlers made excellent contributions to the cause with wickets falling to Ashley Collett and Callum Townsend with another to Greg Harrison, and one of the strongest teams in our group were 50 for 7. We knew at some point that a team of this quality would fight back, and so it was, as the Pannal pair of G Baker (25 retired) and D Jameson (15 not out) had a fine partnership which was supported by M Taylor (7 not out) to take the score to 104.

This was a really good effort by this young Ash team and at the half way point we were looking forward to our spell in the middle.   Unfortunately, the Pannal's team main attribute must be their bowling because they were all fast and hostile and soon got stuck in to the Ash batting line up.   Early casualties were Emily Taylor (2) and Greg Harrison (1) before Ollie Bowes (15 run out) and Dan Gillbanks (7) did some good work in pushing the score along. Unfortunately once these two were removed wickets fell on a regular basis, even Luke Watson our batting hero of the last few weeks fell early on and we subsided to a total of 41 all out.

Each week we look for positive steps and improvements in our performance and certainly the bowling and fielding performance in the first half of the first innings was as good as we have seen from the under 13's team.   The batting of Ollie Bowes and Dan Gillbanks, putting together a nice little partnership against the best bowlers we will probably  see, was also to be commended.   We will be looking forward to next week's game with a view to putting together an even better performance in batting, bowling and fielding!
