Birstwith U 13's   v   Pannal Ash U 13 ’s

We played our first game of the season against the traditionally strong Birstwith team who play their home games at Hampsthwaite CC.

The change of usual game night meant that we were without some of our regular players, although we were able to welcome several new players to our ranks.   Ash skipper, Ashley Collett, managed to lose the toss and Birstwith decided that they were going to bat first with their opening pair of O Hubbert and J Plant.  The Ash opening bowlers Ollie Daley and Ben Chester were playing their first games in our colours and took advantage of the conditions by quickly taking three wickets and the shell shocked hosts found themselves at 12 for 3.

We were then into the body of the Birstwith batsmen and were treated to some excellent stroke play by
M Rogerson (27 retired) C McLachlan (27 retired) and J Dunn (25 not out).   There was excellent work in the field by all the players including young Sam Harrison who having played in the under 11's game on Monday night at Studley Royal, turned out again for the older age group replacing his brother Greg, who was playing a school game over in York.

Birstwith innings closed at a total of 112,  the best Ash bowlers were Olly Daley (1 for 10) and Ben Chester
(2 for 21).

After a quick turnaround the Pannal Ash opening pair of Lauren Thompson and Emily Taylor strode to the wicket.   Lauren was out in the first over, although her sight was somewhat impaired by her hair being over her eyes.   I'm not sure that this will be a suitable excuse for the current England opening pair of Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook,  but then again they haven't got long hair half way down their backs!

Next in was Sam Harrison (6) who hit a tremendous 4 and generally enjoyed himself with the bat in his hand,  although we will have to wait for him to grow a little bit in height so that his little legs will take him a little bit quicker over the course of the length of the cricket pitch as he found himself unfortunately run out.

The Pannal Ash youngsters were finding the pitch was quite lively with Emily Taylor and Ashley Collett both being dealt blows to the body and having to come off to receive attention on the side-lines.   This allowed debutantes Luke Watson (13) and Dan Gillbanks (21) to put together a tremendous little partnership with both hitting some excellent shots, and there was some great running in between the wickets.

We closed our innings at a total of 68,  which was a commendable effort against this strong Birstwith side. The best bowlers were M Rogerson (1 for 9) and D Glover (3 wickets for 2 runs).

This was a much improved effort on last season,  both batting and bowling,  although special commendation should be made on our fielding efforts with the whole team responding to the encouragements of team manager Rob Clarke.   I think everyone recognised the improvements and are keen to step on and improve in the ensuing weeks.
