Killinghall Batsman's 74 Not Out
Pannal Ash won Knaresborough Charity Cup at the third attempt last week, beating Killinghall on Knaresborough CC's ground by one wicket in a tense finish. the final, which attracted excellent 'gates' occupied three evenings.
Killinghall, who opened their innings on Wednesday, scored 150 for the loss of eight wickets on that evening, and the remaining batsmen added another 11 runs on Thursday. The star of the innings was Clarkson, who carried his bat for a very sound 74 (9 4's) Shaw captured 4 wickets for 28.
Pannal Ash made a bad start, losing 2 men for 11 but Young (26) and Hatton (31) quickly improved the position and took the score to 76. The next 2 wickets fell at the same figure the Newbould joined Shaw in a steady partnership which added another 30 runs. When play ended for the night, Shaw (18) and Daniel (5) were together and the the total was 122 for 6. Resuming their innings on Friday the batsmen seemed well set to knock off the runs but at 136 Shaw was bowled by Lofthouse for 27. Daniel left in the next over without any addition to the score, and Freer was out 2 runs later. The last 2 men, Dixon and Joy, were thus left with 23 runs to get. Killinghall, naturally anxious to avoid defeat, were on their toes, and the excitement was intense as the batsmen defied a keen attack and kept the score rising by occasional singles nearer and nearer to the coveted 161. Killinghall tied one or two bowling changes but the Pannal pair kept together, and at last Dixon made the winning hit. This last minute battle of wits kept the crowd on tenterhooks and provided a grand finish to an interesting match.
Presentation of the Cup
The trophy was presented to W Joy, the Pannal Ash captain, by Coun. Ald. H Eddy, President of the competition in the absence of Lady Mackintosh, who was on the field ready to give the cup away on Thursday, but was prevented from performing that duty by the fact the match was unfinished. She was unable to attend again on Friday.
Ald. Eddy did not think anyone present would regret having come to see the finish of the match which had proved most exciting. Both teams had played fine cricket. The President paid tribute to the work of the hon. secretary of the competition, Mr Harry Butterfield, and expressed thanks to the collectors, to Killinghall CC and to all who had helped in any way. He mentioned that the collections at the final had raised £4. 11s 9½d.
Responding, the pannal captain said they had been in the final 3 times, and that was the first time they had managed to 'pull it off'. They had a very good game.
R Smith, captain of Killinghall, congratulated Pannal Ash on their win, and said he hoped the teams would meet again next year. The final had been played in the best spirit of cricket.
A vote of thanks to Ald Eddy was moved by Dr J H Elliott, hon secretary of Knaresborough CC.
